Trabant cars in Berlin

Nowa Huta is the historic steel district of Kraków. Established during the communist era of the 1940s, the Nowa Huta Steelworks was once the largest in the world. The district is also famed as the home of the Trabant car. Known affectionately as “Trabi”, the car was one of the most common vehicles in Central and Eastern Europe during the last decades of the Cold War.

It’s since become a symbol of the Eastern Bloc, remembered for its notorious two-stroke engine that produced a cloud of smoky exhaust, and its body made of duroplast, a form of plastic.
