Riches of the Nile: Why Egypt’s icon is the grandest river in the world

April 11, 2023 by Luxury Gold No Comments

A source of life and power for millennia the River Nile is rightfully known as the grandest river in the world. Its history, prestige and modern-day influence is rooted in its central role in the development of one of the world’s greatest civilizations. The Nile is not only a source of stunning scenery, but also a treasure trove of historic sites that provide a glimpse into the rich and fascinating history of Egypt.

A sacred river

The Nile is the longest river in the world, stretching over 4,000 miles from its source in Lake Victoria to its mouth at the Mediterranean Sea. For thousands of years, it has been a vital lifeline for the people of Egypt, providing water for agriculture, transportation and trade. The river was also a key factor in the rise of ancient Egyptian civilization, with many of the country’s most iconic landmarks and monuments situated along its banks.

The Nile was not only a source of life for the people who lived along its banks but also a key factor in their social, political and economic systems. In ancient times, the Nile was worshipped as the god Hapi, who was believed to be the source of all life. The annual flooding was seen as a gift from the gods, as it provided the necessary water and nutrients to sustain crops and livestock.

Known for its strategic importance

The Nile also provided a means of transportation for goods and people, which facilitated trade and commerce throughout the region. During the colonial period, European powers recognized the strategic importance of controlling the Nile and its tributaries. The Nile Valley became a focal point of international competition, and Britain, France and Italy vied for control of the region.

Today, the Nile remains a vital source of water, food, and energy for millions of people in Egypt, Sudan and other countries along its banks. The Aswan High Dam, completed in 1970, harnesses the power of the Nile to generate electricity and irrigate crops. It ended the cycle of flood and drought in the Nile River region, and exploited a tremendous source of renewable energy, but had a controversial environmental impact.

Sublime from the water

One of the best ways to experience the Nile is by boarding a luxury river cruise. From the comfort of your ship, you’ll be able to soak up the stunning scenery and visit some of Egypt’s most famous landmarks and historical sites.

As you cruise down the Nile, you’ll see why it is the grandest river in the world. Here you can relax and soak up the spectacular scenery. From the lush green banks of the river to the stark desert landscape beyond, the Nile offers a breathtaking variety of landscapes to admire. And as the sun sets over the river, the atmosphere becomes even more magical, with the sound of traditional music and the scent of exotic spices filling the air.

Cairo

One of the major sights of the Nile is Cairo. The ‘City of a Thousand Minarets’ is the capital of Egypt and is one of the largest cities in both Africa and the Middle East. A city rich in history, museums and ancient artefacts, Cairo is also the place to indulge in exceptional hospitality and delicious cuisine.

Egyptian food is a mixture of all the different civilizations that came to Egypt. Savoury dishes, with aromatic spices enable you to taste all these cultures on one plate. In ancient times, the proximity of Egypt to the Middle East and the presence of the River Nile, made trade easy. Hence Egypt enjoyed produce from foreign countries as well, heavily influenced their cuisine.

Cairo is also famous for the Giza Pyramids Complex, which holds one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the Great Pyramid of King Khufu.

Giza – the Great Sphinx and the Pyramids

A spectacular landmark that can be seen from the Nile, the Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the most famous sculptures in the world. This magnificent statue of a lion with a human head is one of the most recognizable symbols of ancient Egypt, along with the great Pyramids. The Pyramids of Giza were built as tombs for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure in the 26th century BCE. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest and most famous, standing at over 480 feet tall.

The Luxor Temple complex

The spectacular Luxor Temple complex spans both banks of the Nile, the grandest river in the world, and houses seven great temples and monuments: Goornah, Deir-el-Bahari, the Colossi of Memnon, the Ramesseum, and Medinet Habu on the West Bank; and Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple on the East Bank. A stunning example of ancient Egyptian architecture and art, the temples were dedicated to the god Amun, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu.

This vast complex of temples and chapels was built over a period of 2,000 years and is one of the largest religious complexes in the world. Towering columns and intricate carvings reveal what life was like for the pharaohs and priests who once worshipped here. The avenue of sphinxes, which connects the temples to the Karnak Temple complex, is also a major highlight.

Kom Ombo

The Temple of Kom Ombo is another historic site along the Nile and was built in the 2nd century BCE during the Ptolemaic dynasty. The temple is unique in that it is dedicated to two gods: the falcon-headed Horus and the crocodile-headed Sobek. Its divided into two sections, each with its own entrance, hall and sanctuary.

One of the most interesting features of the Temple of Kom Ombo is the presence of a number of medical texts and surgical instruments. These artifacts suggest that the temple may have been used as a centre for healing and that the priests who served there may have been skilled in medicine.

 Abu Simbel

Another must-see historical site along the grandest river in the world is Abu Simbel, located in southern Egypt near the border with Sudan. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to two temples built by the pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BCE. The temples are famous for their colossal statues of the pharaoh, which are over 60 feet tall, and for their intricate carvings and hieroglyphs.

The most magnificent of the monuments Ramses II built, Abu Simbel is both the perfect example of the ambition of this pharaoh’s reign and also a model illustration of the achievements of modern engineering and global cooperation. Today, visitors here still crane their necks in disbelief at the behemoth temples just as the pharaoh’s subjects would have done when the temples were first raised.

The entire temple complex was transplanted from its original location and lifted piece by piece to its current site by an international UNESCO team working against the clock to preserve it from being flooded by the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s.

A work of heart: meet the founder of the Rosengart collection

April 5, 2023 by Luxury Gold No Comments

Located in the heart of Lucerne, Switzerland, the Rosengart Collection is home to a world-class collection of over 300 works of art. Here you’ll encounter paintings by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee and 23 other Impressionist and Classic Modernist artists.

The private collection of Angela Rosengart and her father Siegfried Rosengart (now a foundation), guests of Luxury Gold are treated to an exclusive after-hours viewing. Tour the gallery with an expert guide and sip a glass of bubbly surrounded by exquisite masterpieces.

We had the privilege of speaking to the Rosengart Foundation`s president and ‘grande dame of art’ Angela Rosengart, to find out more about the delights that await on this intimate and exclusive experience.

Now aged 90, Angela Rosengart started working for her father at the then Galerie Rosengart when she was 16, and it became her lifelong passion. In 1992 she established the Rosengart Foundation to put the private works on display to the public, and 10 years later in 2002 she opened up the museum.

The Rosengart Collection

The Rosengart Collection is housed in an elegant gallery in Lucerne, a neo-classical palazzo originally constructed for the Swiss National Bank. The collection features 180 works by Pablo Picasso, 125 by Paul Klee plus works from other world-famous 19th and 20th century masters, including Cezanne, Chagall, Monet, Matisse, Miró and Léger.

“The collection is perhaps so special because it is formed by only two people, myself and my father Siegfried Rosengart,” says Angela Rosengart. “So, it is different to what you might see in museums that have been formed by generations of directors. I think people feel it that it is something quite unique.”

“What also makes it so special is that my father and I had a personal relationship with most of the artists exhibited in the museum.”

Thanks to Siegfried and Angela Rosengart’s friendship with Picasso, he is represented in the collection with 32 paintings, including five portraits of Angela Rosengart herself, as well as around one hundred drawings, watercolors, graphic and sculptural works.

Origins of the collection

@museumrosengart

“The Rosengart Collection started as a matter of the heart,” Angela Rosengart tells us. “My father loved art, even as a young man. When he became an art dealer, he continued to deal like he was buying for his personal collection.

“He always said that, even as an art dealer you have to buy only what you like. You must ‘choose like a collector and then sell as an art dealer.’ People always realize whether you love art, or if you just want to do business.

“So, there were always pictures which he didn’t want to sell, and it accumulated over the years. It became a collection, without our wanting to make a collection.”

A natural love of art

“Art was something which was just natural in our house, there were pictures all over,” says Angela Rosengart. “As I child I might not have looked at them, but they were with me.

“Just before I had finished my school years, my father broke his leg skiing. He said I must come and help him, later I could do what I wanted. I soon realized that the profession of art dealing is a wonderful profession, and I didn’t want to do anything else.

“It was something unique to meet all the artists that my father met as a young man; Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró or Fernand Léger. It was natural for me to meet them too, and that was quite a privilege.”

Sitting for Picasso

“I met Picasso in 1949 because he had been a friend of my father for many years. He was very kind to me and asked me to sit for a portrait for him. That was something very special because he didn’t paint many portraits anymore, although in his youth he did.

“There are five portraits of me in the gallery which were painted between 1954 and 1966. To endure Picasso’s gaze was an incredible experience. He seemed to bore into me with his eyes, indeed to eat me up.”

Something special

“Opening up the gallery to the public was a special moment, and something very personal to me,” Angela Rosengart says. “People really enjoy the collection and I take great joy from that. It was great to have a place where the collection could be seen.

“I think the people are often surprised at seeing a collection such as this in Lucerne, to see so many Picassos, so many Paul Klees, the amount is surprising. It’s the only place in Switzerland where you can see so many works by Picasso.

“It is not possible to pick a favorite though, I can only say I have 300 favorites!”

Meeting Dr. Canseco in his ancestral family home, you’ll learn about Peru’s history through the personal lens of his family heritage, as he shares anecdotes and artefacts.

Discover this on: Treasures of the Incas

Meeting Dr. Canseco

In the vibrant Peruvian capital of Lima, you’ll have the privilege of joining Dr. Canseco for a private lunch at his charming villa. As you dine, Dr. Canseco shares stories of his family’s long heritage in Peru, which includes former presidents, politicians and Spanish nobility. You’ll also be treated to an intimate tour of his ancestral home, where many notable figures have set foot before you.

The first members of Dr. Canseco’s family arrived in Peru at the end of the 17th century. Since then, his family has acquired a large collection of paintings, sculptures and other works of art with great historical value—such as Venetian tables dating from the 19th Century and important paintings of the Cusco School.

Peru’s rich history

Peru’s rich and complex history dates back thousands of years, with the earliest inhabitants arriving around about 15,000 years ago. The oldest civilization in the Americas, the Norte Chico, settled on Peru’s coast from around 3500 BCE to 1700 BCE. And, perhaps most famously, Peru was home to the 15th century Inca Empire. Under Spanish colonial rule from 1534, the country became an independent republic in 1824.

Peru’s Republican history is also a complex and fascinating tale. And, for guests of Luxury Gold, Dr. Canseco weaves a captivating narrative as he takes you on a personal tour of his home.

A home with a story to tell

To step inside Dr Canseco’s ancestral home is to step into a living museum. With the warmest of welcomes, explore room after room filled with fascinating mementos and historical treasures, each with a story to tell.

“I will show you a lot of artefacts that have been linked to the history of Peru. And specifically, to the republican history of Peru where my family has had an important role,” Dr Canseco explains.

One such item is a piece of fine chinaware. “In 1879 Peru was defeated by Chile in a war,” Dr. Canseco tells us. “At that time General Andrés Avelino Cáceres (who later became the president of Peru) started guerrilla warfare in the Andean region. His wife, Antonia Moreno Cáceres, whose initials are on this china, brought the ammunition and guns that Cáceres needed to fight the Chileans in the Andes to this very house. And then from here she took them to the Andean region.

“This is also a very beautiful telegram that was sent by John F. Kennedy to my mother, when my stepfather Mr Manuel Seoane, at that time the Ambassador for the Alliance of Progress, died in Washington. In this text Kennedy commends Seoane, as a fighter for freedom, democracy and social justice throughout Latin America.”
