April 2020 marks\u00a0<\/span>50 years<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>since\u00a0<\/span>Earth Day\u00a0<\/span>was established<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to shed light on the<\/span>\u00a0global<\/span>\u00a0environmental decline<\/span>\u00a0phenomenon<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Today,\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>ur world is\u00a0<\/span>facing one of the most<\/span>\u00a0challenging\u00a0<\/span>period<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>generation.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>news cycle\u00a0<\/span>can be\u00a0<\/span>a source of confusion<\/span>\u00a0and anxiety<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for many of us,\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>\u2018uncertainty\u2019\u00a0<\/span>truly being\u00a0<\/span>the only certainty.\u00a0<\/span>April brings\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>Spring for many<\/span>\u00a0around the world<\/span>\u00a0and Earth Day for all, and this year\u00a0<\/span>more than ever we need good news<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0celebration of\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>rogress<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>above all<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>hope<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This Earth Month we\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>celebrat<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0our beautiful\u00a0<\/span>planet\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0all of\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>incredible\u00a0<\/span>life it sustains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>While we get grounded both literally and figuratively as the world hits pause to focus on the COVID-19 crisis, it\u2019s important\u00a0<\/span>now more than ever<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0acknowledg<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0our work isn\u2019t done,\u00a0<\/span>our work\u00a0<\/span>must<\/span>\u00a0not<\/span>\u00a0stop and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>most importantly,\u00a0<\/span>to appreciate\u00a0<\/span>how far we\u2019ve come.<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Progress is often overlooked so this year<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0l<\/span>et\u2019s take inspiration from\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>journey<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>so when\u00a0<\/span>life as we know it resumes and our world is set back into motion<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we\u2019re ready to act.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

O<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>50<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>nniversary of Earth\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>ay<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>let\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>focus on progress<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>hope<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Let\u2019s think about how\u00a0<\/span>modest<\/span>\u00a0actions can turn into movements<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>remember<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>gradual<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>progress<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>matters.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Five decades later<\/span>, here are\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ive\u00a0<\/span>reasons<\/span>\u00a0Earth Day<\/span>\u00a0was started<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/b>5. To <\/span><\/b>unite people who care about the planet, wildlife, and people<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the years and decades leading up to the first Earth Day in April of 1970, Americans were living in conditions detrimental to their personal wellbeing and that of the planet<\/span>. There was<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>little consequence\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>the companies and organizations contributing to\u00a0<\/span>the environmental crisis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>After witnessing a massive oil spill in California in 1969, US Senator Gaylord Nelson was driven to do something. He<\/span>\u00a0was inspired by the student anti-war movement to mobilize against environmental destruction.\u00a0<\/span>As a response to\u00a0<\/span>these\u00a0<\/span>unacceptable conditions, the first Earth Day was\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>protest to demand a better future for<\/span>\u00a0us<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and the generations to come<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>It started on the ground with a limited number of people who organized and rallied behind an important cause.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>situation was\u00a0<\/span>dire<\/span>\u00a0and the message\u00a0<\/span>inarguably<\/span>\u00a0resonated<\/span>\u00a0with the masses<\/span>\u00a0because on April 22, 1970,<\/span>\u00a020 million people<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>in America<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(<\/span>10<\/span>% of the population at the time<\/span>,<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0took to the streets in protest.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Just months after the protest, the\u00a0<\/span>Environmental Protection Agency<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(EPA) was established\u00a0<\/span>in the US<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>which would go on\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0regulat<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>threats to the environment<\/span>\u00a0such as<\/span>\u00a0auto emissions<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane<\/span>\u00a0(DDT)<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>toxic waste,\u00a0<\/span>plastic pollution<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and much more.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/b>4. To <\/span><\/b><\/b>hold<\/span><\/b>\u00a0policy makers accountable<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

On that day\u00a0<\/span>half a century ago<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>20\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>illion people demanded change<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>So much can be accomplished when humanity comes together\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0join<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0forces peacefully.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This event\u00a0<\/span>is credited<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as the beginning of\u00a0<\/span>a wave of\u00a0<\/span>environmental\u00a0<\/span>action.\u00a0<\/span>It\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0the force behind\u00a0<\/span>the passage of\u00a0<\/span>many landmark laws in the US including the\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Clean<\/span>\u00a0Air<\/span>\u00a0Act<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Clean Water<\/span>\u00a0Act<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<\/span>animal protections laws\u00a0<\/span>such as\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Endangered Species Act<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>protects<\/span>\u00a0whales, dolphins, seals<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and manatees.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/b>3. To <\/span><\/b><\/b>start\u00a0<\/span><\/b>a movement<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The modern environmental movement that followed is thanks to this first ever\u00a0<\/span>organization of\u00a0<\/span>Earth Day.\u00a0<\/span>In 1990<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0E<\/span>arth Day<\/span>\u00a0went global and mobilized 200 million people in 141 countries<\/span>, and today<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>is recognized as the\u00a0<\/span>world\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>largest civic event<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1992<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Rio de\u00a0<\/span>Janeiro<\/span>, Brazil<\/span>\u00a0hosted the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This was the third Earth Summit, a meeting of world leaders every 10 years t<\/span>hat started in 1972<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It was here that many countries agreed to\u00a0<\/span>begin\u00a0<\/span>working together to address climate change<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and achieved an agreement on the Climate Change Convention, which led to the Kyoto Protocol\u00a0<\/span>that same year, and eventually the Paris Agreement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/b>2. To <\/span><\/b><\/b>make\u00a0<\/span><\/b>the future of our planet<\/span><\/b>\u00a0a priority<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Following the\u00a0<\/span>USA\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>lead\u00a0<\/span>of policy creation\u00a0<\/span>in response<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0the movement, many countries soon followed suit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Symbolically<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the United Nations chose\u00a0<\/span>Earth Day 2016 as the day the historic Paris Agreement on Climate Change was signe<\/span>d<\/span>. Today, 187 countries are still formally committed to the agreement<\/span>, though progress on commitments has been slow<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. To give <\/span><\/b>YOU a platform<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Throughout the years<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>there have been\u00a0<\/span>many change-makers in the fight for climate action<\/span>\u00a0and the environment<\/span>. Some are\u00a0<\/span>prominent, outspoken leaders and\u00a0<\/span>others<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>quieter\u00a0<\/span>grass-roots organizations<\/span>\u00a0and individuals<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>every<\/span>\u00a0one<\/span>\u00a0is vital<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>hile the work doesn\u2019t begin and end in April,\u00a0<\/span>Earth Month\u00a0<\/span>a reminder that\u00a0<\/span>we<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>must all stand and do our part<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s<\/span>\u00a0look at the last 50 years of activism to fuel and empower our momentum, inspire us to join forces across b<\/span>orders<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>remember that we can and must do more.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
